The “How-To Guide” to staying level headed in the mortgage industry

Erica Higgs, Princeton Mortgage

You know this feeling… it’s 4pm and that project you’ve been working on isn’t even half way finished and its due tomorrow.  If there is one thing I do know, it’s that working in the mortgage industry can be very stressful and overwhelming.   It is important to know how to manage and overcome all the anxiety and pressure we feel daily, so we do not allow those feelings to take over and hinder us from getting the job done.  After all, we are here to help connect our borrowers to the Effortless Mortgage

So how do you stay calm with deadlines approaching and emails piling up in your inbox?  Never fear,   below are a few tips I believe have the potential to help us all:

  • Focus on solutions and not problems - All too often, the first thing we do in the face of adversity is focus on the negative instead of thinking about a solution to the problem. Failure is never the end result unless you make it so.

  • Stay organized - Let’s be honest, who can really stay focused and deliver great service if you work in clutter? Utilizing my Outlook Calendar helps me to stay organized in the processing world.

  • Set boundaries – Saying no is not a bad thing! Do not take on more projects than you can handle.  We want to deliver an effortless mortgage to our customers and the best way to do that is by mastering what you already have on your plate.

  • Break big problems into smaller chunks - For example, take a large task and break it into a list of ‘to-dos’. When you address one part of the list at a time, you can come up with a solution easier than attempting to tackle all at once.

  • We are always better when we work together - Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships!  Never be afraid to ask for help, we are all in this together!

Hopefully by incorporating some or all of these tips… your days, weeks and months will run a little smoother… I know mine have!

Last week I had the chance to sit down with our CEO, Rich Weidel and one great take away that Rich gave me while he was visiting our Pittsburgh office was, “As an individual and as a company, we need to be willing to accept short-term discomfort over long-term dysfunction.” Powerful stuff...

Don’t give up, fight through the adversity and as a team… we will come out on top!

Until next time,

Erica Higgs
